German Confederation

A loose association of 39 German states established in 1815 to coordinate their security and preserve the political order of Central Europe. It dissolved in 1866 after Austria and Prussia went to war.

Federal Convention: The German Confederation’s permanent assembly of state representatives, based in Frankfurt. It was the Confederation’s central organ, where member states coordinated policy.
Congress of Vienna: The 1814–15 diplomatic congress that reorganized Europe after Napoleon’s defeat. Its settlement created the Confederation as part of a broader restoration of European order.
Klemens von Metternich: An Austrian diplomat and statesman who helped shape European politics after Napoleon’s defeat. Metternich championed a conservative order that favored the Confederation’s state-centered structure.
Revolutions of 1848: A wave of revolutions across Europe in 1848, driven by demands for constitutional government, national unity, and social change. The German uprisings challenged the Confederation and briefly produced a rival national assembly.
Kleindeutschland: A proposal for a German nation-state united under Prussian leadership and excluding Austria. This solution emerged after the Confederation’s collapse and rejected Austrian participation in German unity.
Federal Act: The 1815 treaty establishing the German Confederation and defining its basic obligations. It supplied the legal framework for the Confederation’s institutions and mutual defense.
Confederation of the Rhine: A French-backed association of German states that existed from 1806 to 1813 under Napoleon’s influence. Its collapse cleared the way for a post-Napoleonic association organized without French control.
Francis II, Holy Roman Emperor: The last Holy Roman emperor, who became Emperor of Austria in 1804 and abdicated the imperial title in 1806. As Austrian emperor, he became the leading sovereign within the Confederation’s loose framework.
Austro-Prussian War: The 1866 war between Austria and Prussia that ended with Prussian victory and Austria’s exclusion from German affairs. The war dissolved the Confederation and decided which power would lead German unification.
Großdeutschland: A proposal for German unity that included Austria and its German-speaking lands. It offered a broader national alternative to the Confederation’s loose association of states.
