German nationalism

German nationalism is a political ideology that promotes German national identity, unity, and self-determination. Its aims and forms have shifted across different historical periods.

Napoleonic Wars: A series of conflicts from 1803 to 1815 that pitted France against shifting European coalitions. French occupation and reorganization of German territories helped spur demands for national unity.
German language: A West Germanic language spoken primarily in Germany, Austria, and parts of central Europe. Shared language offered nationalists a cultural basis for imagining a German people.
Pan-Germanism: A movement advocating the political union of German-speaking peoples, often beyond the borders of existing German states. It extended national unity claims to German-speaking populations outside the 1871 empire.
Kulturkampf: A conflict in the German Empire during the 1870s between the Prussian-led state and the Catholic Church. Nation-building under Bismarck sought to bring Catholic institutions into a Protestant-dominated national state.
Anschluss: Nazi Germany's annexation of Austria in 1938, presented by the regime as national unification. It shows how a language of self-determination could be used to justify coercive expansion.
Congress of Vienna: The 1814–1815 settlement that reorganized Europe after Napoleon's defeat. Its German Confederation preserved a loose political order rather than the unified nation nationalists sought.
Volksgeist: A Romantic idea of a distinctive collective spirit expressed through a people's culture and history. It supported the claim that Germans formed a cultural nation before they shared a state.
Austrian nationalism: A political identity centered on Austria as a distinct nation, especially after the Habsburg monarchy's collapse. Its development challenged the idea that German-speaking Austrians necessarily belonged in a German nation-state.
German colonial empire: Germany's overseas colonial possessions, held mainly from 1884 until the First World War. Imperial nationalism connected claims of national prestige with colonial expansion.
Heimat: A German term for home, homeland, or place of belonging, with meanings shaped by local and national contexts. It complicates any single definition of German belonging by tying identity to local attachments.
