German New Guinea

German New Guinea was Germany’s colonial territory in the western Pacific from 1884 to 1914. It comprised northeastern New Guinea and several nearby island groups.

German Colonial Empire: Germany’s overseas territories, acquired mainly between 1884 and 1919. German New Guinea became one of the empire’s earliest colonial possessions.
Rabaul: A town on the Gazelle Peninsula of New Britain, founded as a German colonial center. Rabaul became the principal administrative hub after the capital moved there in 1910.
Australian occupation of German New Guinea: Australia’s military occupation of German New Guinea beginning in 1914. Australian forces ended German administration during the First World War.
Kaiser-Wilhelmsland: The name for the northeastern part of New Guinea under German rule. It formed the mainland core of German New Guinea.
Georg von Schleinitz: A German naval officer who became the first imperial governor of German New Guinea. He led the transition from company administration to direct imperial government.
German New Guinea Company: A chartered company that administered German possessions in the western Pacific before direct imperial rule. Its trading ambitions helped prompt Germany’s annexation of northeastern New Guinea.
Herbertshöhe: The German colonial settlement on New Britain now known as Kokopo. It served as the territory’s first administrative center.
South Pacific Mandate: A League of Nations mandate granting Japan administration of former German islands north of the equator. Japan received the northern former German Pacific islands, unlike New Guinea and the Bismarck Archipelago.
New Britain: A large island in the Bismarck Archipelago, northeast of mainland New Guinea. German New Guinea included New Britain, where its major administrative centers stood.
Otto Finsch: A German ornithologist and explorer who helped prepare the German New Guinea Company’s expansion. His expeditions and negotiations supported Germany’s early territorial claims.
