Knowra Gerry Mulligan Gerry Mulligan Gerry Mulligan (1927–1996) was an American jazz baritone saxophonist, composer, and arranger. His light-toned, contrapuntal style helped define cool jazz, especially through his pianoless quartet with Chet Baker.
Chet Baker : Chet Baker was an American jazz trumpeter and singer associated with cool jazz and West Coast jazz. Their pianoless quartet made Mulligan’s contrapuntal arrangements and Baker’s trumpet a defining partnership.
Pianoless quartet : A jazz quartet that omits piano, leaving harmonic support to instruments such as bass and horns. Mulligan’s quartet with Chet Baker made this instrumentation a defining feature of his early West Coast sound.
Birth of the Cool : Birth of the Cool is a set of recordings by Miles Davis’s nonet, made in 1949 and 1950 and released as an album in 1957. Mulligan wrote several arrangements for the sessions, including music that helped establish his cool, contrapuntal approach.
