Gestapo

The Gestapo was Nazi Germany’s secret state police from 1933 to 1945. It used surveillance, informants, interrogation, and arbitrary detention to suppress opposition and enforce racial persecution.

Protective custody: A Nazi police measure allowing detention without ordinary criminal charges or trial. The Gestapo used it to imprison people designated political or racial enemies.
Prussian Secret Police: The political police of Prussia, which investigated threats to the state before and during the Nazi era. Its personnel and policing traditions helped shape the early Gestapo.
Reinhard Heydrich: A senior SS leader who directed Nazi security agencies and organized persecution and mass murder. Heydrich supervised the Gestapo as chief of the Security Police and SD.
Night of the Long Knives: A 1934 purge in which the Nazi regime killed political rivals and other perceived enemies. Gestapo involvement in the purge demonstrated how political policing served regime violence.
Denunciation: The reporting of alleged misconduct or disloyalty to authorities, often by private individuals. Public tips supplied the Gestapo with leads despite its limited staffing.
Hermann Göring: A leading Nazi politician and military commander who became Prussia’s minister president in 1933. Göring established the Gestapo in Prussia in April 1933.
Werner Best: A Nazi jurist and SS official who helped organize the Gestapo and its legal framework. Best shaped the agency’s structure and argued for police power beyond ordinary law.
Kristallnacht: The anti-Jewish pogrom carried out across Nazi Germany on 9–10 November 1938. The Gestapo arrested thousands of Jewish men during the pogrom and sent them to concentration camps.
Interrogation under torture: The coercive questioning of detainees through physical or psychological abuse. The Gestapo used torture to extract information and intimidate those it pursued.
Heinrich Himmler: The head of the SS who controlled Germany’s police forces and security services. Himmler took control of the Gestapo and incorporated it into his security empire.
