Gestural abstraction

Gestural abstraction is abstract art in which energetic, visible marks foreground the painter’s physical actions and the immediacy of making.

Action painting: A mode of abstract painting that foregrounds spontaneous bodily action and the physical process of applying paint. It makes the act of painting itself the central subject.
Abstract Expressionism: A postwar American art movement marked by large-scale abstraction, individual expression, and varied approaches to paint. Gestural abstraction became one of its defining approaches.
