Gia Long

Gia Long (1762–1820) was the founder and first emperor of Vietnam’s Nguyễn dynasty, ruling from 1802 until his death. He unified Vietnam under Nguyễn rule and established Huế as the imperial capital.

Nguyễn lords: A line of rulers who governed southern Vietnam from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. Gia Long descended from this ruling family, whose territories the Tây Sơn uprising displaced.
Vietnamese reunification: The consolidation of Vietnam under one government after prolonged division and civil conflict. Gia Long’s conquest ended the Tây Sơn regime and brought the country under Nguyễn rule.
Quang Trung: The Tây Sơn emperor who defeated Siamese and Qing invasions before dying in 1792. His victories made him Gia Long’s most formidable predecessor and rival for national rule.
Nam tiến: The centuries-long southward expansion of Vietnamese settlement and political control. Gia Long inherited territories formed through this expansion and ruled them as one kingdom.
Tây Sơn dynasty: The Vietnamese ruling house established by the Tây Sơn movement, which held power before the Nguyễn dynasty. It was the regime Gia Long defeated to establish Nguyễn rule.
Tây Sơn rebellion: An uprising beginning in 1771 that overthrew the Nguyễn lords and reshaped Vietnam’s political order. Its victory forced the young Nguyễn Ánh into decades of exile and military struggle.
Nguyễn dynasty: Vietnam’s last imperial dynasty, which ruled from 1802 to 1945. Gia Long founded the dynasty and established its institutions.
Minh Mạng: The second Nguyễn emperor, who ruled Vietnam from 1820 to 1841. Gia Long’s son inherited the throne and expanded the centralized imperial state.
Mekong Delta: A fertile delta in southern Vietnam formed by branches of the Mekong River. Its incorporation under Nguyễn rule strengthened the dynasty’s control of southern Vietnam.
French intervention in Vietnam: French political and military involvement in Vietnam, which intensified during the nineteenth century. Gia Long’s European allies prompt debate about the extent of foreign influence in his restoration.
