Giant salamander

Giant salamanders are large, fully aquatic salamanders in the family Cryptobranchidae, native to East Asia and North America. Living species include the Chinese giant salamander, Japanese giant salamander, and hellbender.

Cryptobranchidae: A family of large, aquatic salamanders that includes the hellbender and Asian giant salamanders. This taxonomic family contains every living giant salamander.
Chinese giant salamander: A group of enormous aquatic salamanders native to China, now critically threatened in the wild. It is the largest and most imperiled member of the family.
External fertilization: Reproduction in which eggs and sperm unite outside the bodies of the parents. Male giant salamanders guard nests where fertilization occurs in water.
