Gilbert Ryle

Gilbert Ryle (1900–1976) was an English philosopher who challenged Cartesian mind–body dualism and analyzed how language and category mistakes shape philosophical problems.

Category mistake: A conceptual error that treats something as belonging to a logical category it does not belong to. Ryle used this diagnosis to expose the mistake he saw in treating mind as an additional object alongside the body.
Ordinary language philosophy: A philosophical approach that examines ordinary uses of language to clarify or dissolve philosophical problems. Ryle’s attention to how mental expressions function connects his work to this broader approach.

Substance dualism: The view that reality includes distinct mental and physical substances. This is the dualist position Ryle attacks most directly in his analysis of the official doctrine.
Logical behaviorism: The view that statements about mental states can be analyzed in terms of behavior and behavioral dispositions. Ryle’s account of mental concepts is often associated with this approach, though his philosophy is not simply a behavioral theory.
Disposition: A tendency to behave or change in characteristic ways under specified conditions. Dispositions provide the basic idea behind Ryle’s analyses of many mental abilities and traits.
