Gilgamesh

Gilgamesh is a legendary king of Uruk and the central hero of an ancient Mesopotamian epic. The stories follow his friendship with Enkidu, his grief, and his search for lasting life.

Enkidu: A wild man created by the gods who becomes Gilgamesh’s companion and friend. Their friendship changes Gilgamesh and gives the epic its central bond.
Sumerian poems about Gilgamesh: A group of Sumerian compositions recounting episodes from Gilgamesh’s legendary life. These earlier poems preserve stories later reshaped in the Akkadian epic.
Uruk: An ancient Mesopotamian city in southern Iraq and one of the world’s earliest major urban centers. Gilgamesh rules Uruk, whose walls frame the epic’s opening and closing.
