Gilgit-Baltistan

Gilgit-Baltistan is a mountainous territory in northern Pakistan, administered by Pakistan as a region and claimed within the wider Kashmir dispute. It includes the upper Indus valley and parts of the Karakoram, Himalaya, and Hindu Kush ranges.

Karakoram: A high mountain range spanning parts of Pakistan, India, and China, containing many of the world's highest peaks. The range dominates Gilgit-Baltistan's northern landscape and shapes access between its valleys.
Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly: The elected legislative body established for Gilgit-Baltistan under Pakistan's regional governance framework. It exercises limited legislative authority within the territory's special administrative arrangement.
Princely state of Jammu and Kashmir: A princely state under British paramountcy from 1846 until the partition of British India in 1947. Gilgit-Baltistan formed part of this state's northern territories before the partition-era conflict.
Karakoram Highway: A highway connecting northern Pakistan with western China through the Karakoram Mountains. It links Gilgit-Baltistan's towns to Pakistan's national road network and the Chinese border.
China–Pakistan Economic Corridor: A collection of infrastructure and development projects linking China and Pakistan, associated with China's Belt and Road Initiative. Its routes pass through Gilgit-Baltistan, making the territory strategically significant to both countries.
Indus River: A major South Asian river that rises in Tibet and flows through the Himalaya and Pakistan to the Arabian Sea. Its upper course links settlements and landscapes across the territory.
Gilgit-Baltistan Council: A governing body created under the 2009 Gilgit-Baltistan Empowerment and Self-Governance Order. Its former role illustrates how authority has been divided between regional and federal institutions.
Treaty of Amritsar: The 1846 treaty by which the British transferred Kashmir to Gulab Singh, establishing the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. It established the princely state whose northern frontier later encompassed the region.
Khunjerab Pass: A high mountain pass on the Pakistan–China border in the Karakoram range. The pass is the highway's northern crossing and a key frontier gateway.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 47: A 1948 UN Security Council resolution recommending measures for a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir. The resolution belongs to the international diplomacy surrounding the dispute that includes Gilgit-Baltistan.
