Girondins

The Girondins were a loose grouping of deputies in the French National Convention during the Revolution. They supported the republic while opposing the Montagnards’ centralizing radicalism.

Jacques Pierre Brissot: A French journalist and politician who became a leading Girondin deputy during the Revolution. His advocacy of war against Austria helped define the group’s early revolutionary policy.
National Convention: The elected assembly that governed France from 1792 to 1795 and abolished the monarchy. The Girondins’ influence and defeat unfolded inside this assembly.
Montagnards: A radical grouping in the National Convention associated with the Mountain benches and centralized revolutionary government. They became the Girondins’ principal rivals in the Convention.
Girondin purge: The arrest and political exclusion of Girondin deputies in June 1793. It ended the group’s dominance and forced surviving leaders into flight or prison.
Pierre Vergniaud: A French lawyer and revolutionary orator who represented Gironde in the National Convention. His speeches made him one of the Girondins’ most prominent public voices.

Girondin Reprisals: Revolts in several French departments after the Girondin deputies were expelled from the Convention. These uprisings showed how the purge widened conflict between Paris and the provinces.
Madame Roland: A French political writer whose salon and correspondence influenced revolutionary republican politics. Her circle connected Girondin deputies and helped spread their political arguments.
Insurrection of 31 May–2 June 1793: A Paris uprising that pressured the Convention to arrest prominent Girondin deputies. It marked the decisive removal of the Girondins from political power.
