Giuseppe Peano

Giuseppe Peano (1858–1932) was an Italian mathematician and logician whose axioms formalized the natural numbers and whose work helped shape mathematical logic. He also created the auxiliary language Latino sine flexione.

Peano axioms: A set of axioms characterizing the natural numbers through zero, successor, and mathematical induction. They are Peano’s best-known formulation of the structure of arithmetic.
Giovanni Vailati: An Italian philosopher and historian of science associated with the Peano school of mathematical logic. Vailati belonged to the intellectual circle that developed around Peano’s formal program.
Latino sine flexione: An auxiliary language created by Peano that adapts Latin by removing most inflectional forms. It was Peano’s independent effort to make international communication easier.

Principia Mathematica: A three-volume work by Alfred North Whitehead and Bertrand Russell that derives mathematics from symbolic logic. Russell’s use of Peano’s notation helped shape this landmark formalization.
