Glacier monitoring

Glacier monitoring is the systematic measurement of glacier extent, movement, mass, and related environmental conditions. It tracks glacier change through field observations, instruments, and remote sensing.

Glacier mass balance: The difference between the mass a glacier gains and loses over a specified period. Field measurements of accumulation and ablation provide a direct record of glacier gain or loss.
Glacier: A persistent body of ice formed from accumulated snow that moves under its own weight. The monitored object is defined by its long-term accumulation, flow, and loss.
Glacier lake outburst flood: A sudden flood caused by the release of water from a lake dammed by glacier ice or moraine. Monitoring can detect expanding lakes and unstable barriers before catastrophic drainage.
Glaciological method: A field method that estimates glacier mass balance from direct measurements of snow accumulation and ice loss. It measures local processes directly, unlike methods that infer change from regional surface differences.
Satellite remote sensing: The collection of information about Earth from sensors on satellites. Satellite images reveal glacier boundaries and surface changes across remote regions.
Glacier terminus: The lower end or margin of a glacier. Terminus position is a visible measure of glacier advance and retreat.
Sea-level rise: A long-term increase in the average level of the world's oceans. Glacier mass-loss records quantify one contributor to rising ocean levels.
Geodetic method: A method for estimating glacier mass change by comparing surface elevations or volumes at different times. It provides spatially integrated change, complementing point-based field measurements.
Interferometric synthetic-aperture radar: A radar technique that uses phase differences between repeated images to measure surface displacement. Radar interferometry maps glacier movement even when clouds or darkness obstruct optical observations.
Equilibrium line altitude: The altitude on a glacier where annual accumulation equals annual ablation. Its position helps characterize the balance between snow gain and ice loss.
