Gladiator

A trained armed combatant who fought in public spectacles in ancient Rome. Gladiators faced one another or animals under rules shaped by weapon, armor, and event.

Gladiator school: An institution where gladiators lived, trained, and were managed for public combat. Schools prepared fighters for combat and organized their lives under a trainer’s authority.
Funerary games: Public contests and performances held in honor of the dead in ancient societies. Roman accounts connect early gladiatorial combats with rites honoring the deceased.
Spartacus: A gladiator who led a major slave revolt against Rome from 73 to 71 BCE. His revolt made a gladiator an enduring figure in Roman political and military history.
Gladiatorial games: Public Roman spectacles featuring gladiatorial combat, staged by civic officials or private sponsors. These events were the setting in which gladiators fought and audiences judged their performance.
Roman slavery: A system in which people in ancient Rome could be treated as property and compelled to labor. Many gladiators were enslaved, though free volunteers also entered the arena.
Lanista: A trainer and manager who owned or recruited gladiators and supplied them to spectacles. The lanista selected, trained, and contracted fighters for arena appearances.
Munus: A public duty or offering in Rome, including spectacles staged by an elite sponsor. Gladiatorial shows were known as munera, offerings made to the community and sometimes the dead.
Flamma: A Syrian gladiator whose epitaph records 34 fights and four refusals of freedom. His inscription offers unusually detailed evidence about an individual gladiator’s career.
Venatio: A Roman arena spectacle featuring hunts or combat with wild animals. Animal hunts shared the arena program but were distinct from gladiator-versus-gladiator bouts.
Infamia: A Roman legal and social condition that restricted the civic standing of certain people. Gladiators faced stigma and civic disabilities even when they gained public fame.
