Gladstone–Dale relation

The Gladstone–Dale relation states that a material’s refractive index minus one is proportional to its density, with a constant characteristic of the material.

Refractive index: A dimensionless measure of how much light slows and bends in a material relative to vacuum. The relation expresses its excess over one as proportional to density.
Schlieren photography: An optical imaging technique that visualizes refractive-index gradients in transparent media. Density gradients can become visible because the relation links them to refractive-index gradients.
John Hall Gladstone: A British chemist whose studies of refractive power helped establish empirical relations between optics and composition. His measurements contributed to the relation bearing his name.
Refractive-index gradient: A spatial change in refractive index within a material. Using the relation to infer density gradients requires a suitably uniform constant.
Mass density: Mass per unit volume of a substance. It is the material property multiplied by the Gladstone–Dale constant.
Rayleigh interferometry: An interferometric method for comparing optical path lengths in gases or other transparent samples. Its refractive-index measurements can be interpreted as density differences using the relation.
Thomas Pellatt Dale: A British chemist who collaborated with John Hall Gladstone on refractive-power measurements. His collaboration with Gladstone gave the empirical relation its paired name.
Optical dispersion: The variation of a material’s refractive response with light frequency or wavelength. The Gladstone–Dale constant changes with wavelength, limiting comparisons across spectral bands.
Gladstone–Dale constant: The proportionality constant relating a material’s refractive index minus one to its density. This coefficient carries the material-specific factor in the relation.
Gas refractometry: Measurement of a gas’s refractive index to characterize its optical or physical properties. For a known gas composition, the relation connects the measured index to density.
