Glans penis

The expanded, sensitive distal end of the penis, formed by the head of the corpus spongiosum and usually covered by the foreskin when present.

Penis: An external reproductive organ that also carries urine out of the body. The glans is the penis’s expanded distal end.
Penile erection: An increase in penile blood filling and rigidity, usually triggered by sexual arousal. Erection changes penile rigidity and can affect glans fullness.
Balanitis: Inflammation of the glans penis, sometimes involving the foreskin as well. It is a common clinical condition centered on the glans.
Clitoris: An erectile organ with highly sensitive external and internal components in female anatomy. The glans penis and clitoral glans are developmentally related but differ in structure and location.
Corpus spongiosum: A column of erectile tissue surrounding the penile urethra and expanding distally to form the glans. This erectile tissue continues into and forms the glans.
Erectile tissue: Specialized tissue that fills with blood during erection. The glans contains erectile tissue, though its structure differs from the paired corpora cavernosa.
Phimosis: A condition in which the foreskin cannot be retracted over the glans. Restricted foreskin retraction can affect glans exposure and hygiene.
Glans clitoridis: The visible external tip of the clitoris, rich in sensory nerve endings. It is the closest anatomical counterpart to the glans penis.
Foreskin: A retractable fold of skin that covers the glans in an uncircumcised penis. It commonly covers the glans and can move back to expose it.
Somatic nervous system: The nervous system division that carries sensory information and controls voluntary skeletal muscle. Somatic sensory pathways carry touch and pain signals from the glans.
