Glassy systems

Glassy systems are systems whose dynamics become trapped among many metastable states, producing slow relaxation and strong dependence on history. They occur in materials and models with complex energy landscapes, often but not always involving disorder.

Energy landscape: A representation of a system's possible configurations and their energies, showing minima and the barriers between them. Many metastable minima and high barriers account for trapping and slow evolution.
Glass transition: The kinetic transition in which a liquid falls out of equilibrium and becomes a glass as it is cooled or compressed. It is the common experimental route into structural glassiness.
Structural glass: An amorphous solid formed when a liquid freezes without crystallizing into long-range order. It is the familiar material realization of glassy arrest and history dependence.
Crystallization: The formation of a solid with a regular, repeating atomic or molecular structure. Crystallization creates ordered structure, whereas structural glasses arrest without it.
Adam–Gibbs theory: A theory relating a liquid's structural relaxation time to its configurational entropy. It proposes that shrinking configurational entropy drives the growth of relaxation times.
Metastability: Persistence in a state that is locally stable but not the system's lowest-energy state. Glassy systems remain in local minima long after lower-energy states become inaccessible.
Relaxation time: The characteristic time over which a system loses memory of a disturbance or initial condition. Its dramatic growth is a defining measurable signature of glassy slowing.
Spin glass: A magnetic system with competing interactions and disordered spin orientations that freezes without conventional magnetic order. It provides a well-studied model of frustration, metastability, and complex relaxation.
Supercooled liquid: A liquid cooled below its melting point without crystallizing. It can remain mobile before its relaxation becomes glass-like and effectively arrested.
Random first-order transition theory: A framework that explains glass formation through a proposed transition between liquid and amorphous states. It predicts an underlying thermodynamic transition that remains difficult to establish experimentally.
