Glossators

Glossators were medieval jurists who explained Roman law by writing annotations alongside its texts. Their glosses helped make the Corpus Juris Civilis a foundation of European legal study.

Glossa ordinaria: The standardized body of glosses on the Corpus Juris Civilis assembled by Accursius. Accursius’s compilation gathered earlier annotations into the gloss most widely used by later law students.
Bologna: An Italian city whose medieval university became a leading center of Roman and canon law study. The earliest glossators taught and worked in Bologna, where the revived study of Roman law took root.
Bulgarus: A twelfth-century Bolognese jurist regarded as one of the leading early glossators. His teaching helped establish the school’s reputation for close and technically precise interpretation.
Commentators: Later medieval jurists who developed Roman law through extensive commentary and practical interpretation. They followed the glossators chronologically but moved beyond concise annotations toward fuller legal arguments.
Accursius: A thirteenth-century Italian jurist who compiled the Glossa ordinaria on Roman law. His synthesis became the most authoritative gloss produced by the school.
Irnerius: An early twelfth-century jurist associated with the revival of Roman law teaching at Bologna. Later tradition identifies him as the founder of the glossator school.
Martinus Gosia: A twelfth-century Bolognese jurist and prominent early glossator. His interpretations illustrate disagreements among the leading masters over Roman-law texts.
Ius commune: The shared learned legal tradition of medieval and early modern Europe, grounded in Roman and canon law. Glossator study helped make Roman law a common scholarly framework across European jurisdictions.
Corpus Juris Civilis: The sixth-century compilation of Roman imperial law commissioned by Emperor Justinian I. Its texts supplied the material that glossators annotated and taught.
Pepo: An eleventh-century legal teacher associated with the early revival of Roman law in Italy. Accounts of Roman-law teaching before Irnerius make Pepo a possible precursor to the glossators.
