Glossophobia

Glossophobia is intense fear or anxiety about speaking before an audience. It can cause distress and avoidance, and may occur as a specific phobia or as part of social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder: A mental health disorder marked by persistent fear of social situations involving possible scrutiny or negative evaluation. Glossophobia can be one expression of this broader fear of social judgment.
Cognitive behavioral therapy: A structured psychotherapy that helps people identify and change unhelpful patterns of thought and behavior. It can address catastrophic predictions about speaking and reduce avoidance through practice.
Social phobia: An older name for social anxiety disorder, involving marked fear of social situations where a person may be judged. Glossophobia may be confined to speaking, while social phobia can span many social situations.
Avoidance behavior: Actions that reduce contact with situations, objects, or experiences perceived as threatening or distressing. Avoiding presentations can limit opportunities that require speaking before groups.
Fear conditioning: A form of associative learning in which a previously neutral cue comes to provoke fear after being paired with an aversive event. A humiliating or frightening speaking experience can make audience situations feel threatening later.
Systematic desensitization: A behavioral treatment that pairs relaxation with gradual exposure to a hierarchy of feared situations. A speaker can progress from imagining a talk to addressing a live audience.
Panic disorder: A mental health disorder involving recurrent unexpected panic attacks and persistent concern or behavioral changes related to them. A panic attack may occur during a speech, but panic disorder is not defined by audience fear.
Self-efficacy: A person's belief in their capacity to organize and carry out actions needed to achieve a specific goal. Repeated successful speaking experiences can strengthen confidence in handling future talks.
Anticipatory anxiety: Anxiety experienced while expecting a future event perceived as threatening or stressful. The fear often begins well before a speech, as the event is imagined and rehearsed.
Public speaking: The act of delivering a speech or presentation to an audience. It is the activity that glossophobia makes difficult, from brief remarks to formal presentations.
