Glottolog

Glottolog is a scholarly database and catalog of the world's languages, dialects, and language families, with bibliographic references and classifications for each.

Language family: A group of languages descended from a common ancestral language. Glottolog organizes many entries into genealogical families.
Language classification: The grouping of languages according to genealogical relationships or other stated criteria. Glottolog records proposed genealogical groupings and their evidential basis.
Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology: A German research institute studying human evolution, language, and culture. Glottolog was developed and is maintained at this institute.
Glottolog API: A software interface for accessing structured data from Glottolog. The API makes catalog records available for computational research.
Dialect: A variety of a language distinguished by features such as pronunciation, vocabulary, or grammar. Glottolog catalogs dialects alongside languages and families.
