Glutaric acid

Glutaric acid is a five-carbon dicarboxylic acid with formula C₅H₈O₄. It occurs as a metabolic intermediate and is used to make polymers and other chemicals.

Dicarboxylic acid: An organic acid containing two carboxyl groups. Glutaric acid belongs to this family because each end of its carbon chain carries a carboxyl group.
Polyamide: A polymer whose repeating units are joined by amide bonds. Glutaric acid derivatives can supply the diacid component used to build polyamides.
Lysine: An essential amino acid with a basic side chain. Lysine degradation can generate glutaric acid as an intermediate.
Chemical nomenclature: A system for naming chemical substances according to shared rules. The name glutaric acid reflects conventional naming for this five-carbon dicarboxylic acid.
Glutaric aciduria: A group of inherited disorders associated with excess glutaric acid in body fluids. Glutaric acid accumulation gives this group of metabolic disorders its name.
Carboxyl group: The functional group –COOH, consisting of a carbonyl and hydroxyl bonded to the same carbon. Its two carboxyl groups give glutaric acid its acidic behavior and characteristic reactions.
Polyester: A polymer containing ester linkages in its main chain. Glutaric acid can react with diols to form polyester materials.
Tryptophan: An essential aromatic amino acid containing an indole ring. A pathway of tryptophan degradation can also produce glutaric acid.
IUPAC nomenclature: International rules for systematic naming of chemical compounds. Its systematic IUPAC name, pentanedioic acid, describes the chain and terminal acid groups.
Glutaryl-CoA dehydrogenase: A mitochondrial enzyme that converts glutaryl-CoA to crotonyl-CoA through glutaconyl-CoA. Its deficiency is the principal biochemical cause of glutaric acidemia type 1.
