Glyceraldehyde

Glyceraldehyde is a three-carbon monosaccharide and the simplest aldose sugar. Its single stereogenic center gives it two enantiomeric forms, D-glyceraldehyde and L-glyceraldehyde.

Aldose: A monosaccharide whose open-chain form contains an aldehyde group. Glyceraldehyde is the smallest member of this sugar family.
Aldehyde: An organic compound containing a terminal carbonyl group bonded to hydrogen. The open-chain form of glyceraldehyde has an aldehyde group.
D/L system: A convention assigning carbohydrate configuration by comparison with glyceraldehyde. The two glyceraldehyde enantiomers define the reference configurations for sugars.
Dextro- and levorotation: The clockwise or counterclockwise rotation of plane-polarized light by a substance. D/L configuration does not by itself predict the direction of glyceraldehyde’s optical rotation.
Monosaccharide: A carbohydrate unit that cannot be hydrolyzed into simpler sugars. Glyceraldehyde is a single sugar unit, not a sugar chain.
Aldol reaction: A carbon–carbon bond-forming reaction between carbonyl compounds involving an enol or enolate. Glyceraldehyde can participate as a small carbonyl-containing aldose.
Absolute configuration: The three-dimensional arrangement of atoms around a stereogenic center, specified independently of other molecules. Glyceraldehyde’s configurations provide an early reference for assigning sugar stereochemistry.
Racemic mixture: An equal mixture of two enantiomers with no net optical rotation. A racemate contains both glyceraldehyde enantiomers rather than one configured form.
Stereogenic center: An atom whose substitution can produce stereoisomers. Glyceraldehyde’s central carbon is its sole stereogenic center.
Glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate: A phosphorylated three-carbon sugar that is an intermediate in glycolysis and carbon fixation. Adding phosphate at carbon three converts glyceraldehyde into a central metabolic intermediate.
