Goalkeeper (association football)

A goalkeeper is the player primarily responsible for preventing the opposing team from scoring. The goalkeeper may handle the ball within their own penalty area, subject to the Laws of the Game.

Penalty area: The marked area in front of each goal where the goalkeeper may handle the ball. Its boundary determines where the goalkeeper’s special handling privilege applies.
Association football: A team sport in which two sides try to score by moving a ball into the opposing goal, chiefly with their feet. Goalkeeping is a specialized playing role within this sport.
Diving save: A save made by a goalkeeper who dives toward a shot that is beyond their standing reach. It lets the goalkeeper reach shots aimed toward the corners.
Outfield player: Any association football player who is not the goalkeeper. Outfield players generally cannot handle the ball during play.
Lev Yashin: Soviet association football goalkeeper who won the 1963 Ballon d'Or and played for Dynamo Moscow. His command of the penalty area and distribution helped redefine expectations of the role.
Laws of the Game: The rules published by the International Football Association Board that govern association football. They define the goalkeeper’s handling rights, restrictions, and conduct during play.
Goal (sports)|Football goal: The framed opening into which a team must send the ball to score in association football. The goalkeeper’s central task is to prevent the ball crossing its line.
Penalty shoot-out: A tie-breaking procedure in which teams take alternating kicks from the penalty mark. The goalkeeper must defend each kick while following positioning rules.
Futsal goalkeeper: The player responsible for defending the goal in futsal, a small-sided indoor form of football with distinct rules. Futsal imposes different restrictions on goalkeeper possession and distribution.
Gordon Banks: English goalkeeper who won the 1966 FIFA World Cup with England. His save from Pelé at the 1970 World Cup became an enduring example of reflex goalkeeping.
