Godfrey Hounsfield

Godfrey Hounsfield was an English electrical engineer whose work produced the first commercially viable computed tomography scanner. He shared the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Allan Cormack.

Allan Cormack: Allan Cormack was a physicist whose mathematical work helped establish computed tomography. His independent reconstruction theory and Hounsfield’s scanner development jointly earned the 1979 Nobel Prize.
Computed tomography: Computed tomography reconstructs cross-sectional images from measurements taken at multiple angles. Hounsfield’s scanner made this imaging method practical for clinical use.
EMI Scanner: The EMI Scanner was the first commercially available computed tomography scanner, introduced for clinical brain imaging. Hounsfield designed this prototype system at EMI.
Medical imaging: Medical imaging creates visual representations of anatomy or physiological processes for clinical purposes. CT became a major imaging modality through Hounsfield’s scanner.
James Ambrose: James Ambrose was a British neuroradiologist who helped evaluate early computed tomography scans. He collaborated with Hounsfield to test the scanner on clinical cases.
Radon transform: The Radon transform represents a function through its integrals over lines or planes. Tomographic reconstruction uses related projections to recover internal structures.
Head CT: Head CT uses computed tomography to image the brain, skull, and surrounding structures. The first EMI scanner was designed specifically to produce brain images.
Neuroradiology: Neuroradiology uses imaging to diagnose and treat disorders of the brain, spine, and nervous system. The first CT scanner brought detailed, noninvasive brain imaging into clinical practice.
John Radon: John Radon was an Austrian mathematician whose integral transform underlies tomographic image reconstruction. His theorem supplied mathematical foundations for reconstructing images from projections.
X-ray: X-rays are high-energy electromagnetic waves that penetrate matter to varying degrees. The scanner measured how body tissues attenuated X-rays from multiple directions.
