Gojong of Korea

Gojong ruled Joseon from 1863 and became the first emperor of the Korean Empire in 1897. His reign spanned foreign encroachment, domestic reform, and Japan’s growing control over Korea.

Gojong’s refuge at the Russian legation: Gojong’s 1896 flight from his palace to the Russian legation in Seoul, where he remained for about a year. The episode demonstrated the court’s vulnerability and preceded the empire’s proclamation.
Gapsin Coup: A failed 1884 coup by reformists seeking a rapid political reordering of Joseon. Its defeat showed how rival factions and foreign powers constrained Gojong’s reform agenda.
Queen Min: The royal consort of Gojong, later known as Empress Myeongseong, who became a major political force. Her court faction challenged the regent and shaped the politics around Gojong.
