Gojoseon

Gojoseon was an ancient Korean polity traditionally dated from 2333 BCE to 108 BCE. Its historical record combines archaeological evidence with later Korean accounts.

Dangun: A legendary founder of Gojoseon in traditional Korean accounts. The foundation narrative attributes Gojoseon’s founding to Dangun in 2333 BCE.
Wiman Joseon: The late Gojoseon regime established by Wiman, traditionally dated from 194 to 108 BCE. This final phase brought political consolidation and direct conflict with Han China.
Joseon: A Korean name used for several states and periods, including Gojoseon and the Joseon dynasty. The shared name makes the qualifier “old” essential when distinguishing the ancient polity.
Buyeo: An ancient state in Manchuria and northern Korea that flourished after Gojoseon’s fall. Buyeo became a major successor polity in the region after Gojoseon disappeared.
Samguk Yusa: A collection of Korean legends, histories, and Buddhist stories compiled in the thirteenth century. It preserves the Dangun account that shaped traditional dates for Gojoseon.
Wiman: A leader who seized power in Gojoseon around 194 BCE and founded the regime known as Wiman Joseon. His takeover marks the transition to Gojoseon’s best-documented ruling house.
Old Chosŏn: A conventional English name for the ancient Korean polity also called Gojoseon. This is the older English rendering of the polity’s name.
Goguryeo: An ancient Korean kingdom that ruled parts of Manchuria and the Korean Peninsula from 37 BCE to 668 CE. Later Korean traditions connected Goguryeo’s origins to the political world of Gojoseon.
Liaoning Bronze Dagger Culture: A Bronze Age archaeological culture associated with distinctive dagger forms in Northeast China and the Korean Peninsula. Its material remains provide a key archaeological context for early Gojoseon.
Han–Gojoseon War: A war between Han China and Gojoseon that ended with Han’s conquest in 108 BCE. The war ended Gojoseon’s independent rule and reshaped the region.
