Gold ground

A pictorial background made with gold leaf or gold-colored material rather than represented natural scenery. It can evoke sacred radiance, wealth, or a setting outside ordinary space and time.

Gold leaf: Extremely thin sheets of gold made by hammering or rolling metal. Its reflective surface is the classic material used to create a gold ground.
Byzantine art: The art produced in the Byzantine Empire and its cultural sphere, especially from the fourth century onward. Its icons and mosaics made the gold ground a defining sacred-image convention.
