Golden Age of Piracy

A period of intense maritime piracy, chiefly in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean, spanning roughly the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

Blackbeard: An English pirate captain active in the Caribbean and along North America’s Atlantic coast in the early 18th century. His dramatic reputation became one of the era’s most enduring pirate legends.
Privateering: State-authorized maritime raiding of enemy shipping by privately owned vessels during wartime. Privateering supplied ships and experience, while its legal status could blur into piracy.
War of the Spanish Succession: A European war fought from 1701 to 1714 over the Spanish crown and its empire. Its end left many experienced sailors without wartime employment.
Piracy Act 1698: An English statute that expanded the prosecution of piracy and enabled trials overseas. It strengthened the legal machinery used to pursue pirates beyond England.
Raid on the Ganj-i-Sawai: A 1695 attack by Henry Every’s crew on a Mughal ship returning from the Red Sea pilgrimage route. The seizure provoked a major diplomatic crisis between the Mughal Empire and English authorities.
Bartholomew Roberts: A Welsh pirate captain who captured hundreds of vessels in the Atlantic and Caribbean between 1719 and 1722. His unusually successful career shows the scale piracy could reach in the era.
Pirate ship: A vessel used by pirates to pursue, capture, and plunder other ships. A ship’s speed, armament, and crew shaped which targets pirates could attack.
Treaty of Utrecht: The 1713 agreements that ended major parts of the War of the Spanish Succession and reshaped imperial claims. Peace settlements and naval demobilization helped swell the pool of unemployed seafarers.
Piracy Act 1717: A British statute offering pardons to pirates who surrendered by a specified deadline and imposing penalties on those who refused. Its pardon policy sought to dismantle pirate crews while isolating holdouts.
Capture of Blackbeard: The 1718 naval operation in which Lieutenant Robert Maynard’s force killed Blackbeard near Ocracoke Inlet. It illustrates the direct armed campaigns used against prominent pirates.
