Golden Liberty

Golden Liberty was the political order of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, granting the nobility extensive rights and a central role in government. Its defining institutions included an elected monarchy, the Sejm, and the liberum veto.

Sejm of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth: The Commonwealth’s central parliament, composed of the king, Senate, and Chamber of Deputies. It was the main forum where noble representatives legislated and could invoke the liberum veto.
Szlachta: The legally privileged nobility of Poland and the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Golden Liberty was chiefly the political system through which this estate exercised power.
Privilege of Koszyce: A 1374 charter granting Polish nobles significant tax and political concessions in exchange for recognizing a royal successor. It illustrates how dynastic bargaining began expanding noble privileges before the Commonwealth.
Deluge (Polish history): A series of mid-seventeenth-century wars and invasions that devastated the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. The crisis exposed the strain that war placed on a political system reliant on noble consent.

Liberum veto: A parliamentary rule allowing one deputy to block a measure and dissolve a Sejm session. It embodied the principle of unanimity but could prevent the Commonwealth from governing.
Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth: A federal state formed by Poland and Lithuania in 1569 and lasting until 1795. Golden Liberty developed as the Commonwealth’s political order.
Nieszawa Statutes: A set of 1454 royal concessions requiring consultation with local noble assemblies on important matters. They strengthened noble influence over legislation and military levies.
Silent Sejm of 1717: A brief parliamentary session that imposed limits on the king and military while Russia mediated the settlement. It demonstrates how domestic constitutional disputes could invite foreign intervention.
