Golden rice

Golden rice is genetically engineered rice whose edible endosperm produces beta-carotene, a precursor the body can convert into vitamin A.

Beta-carotene: A red-orange carotenoid pigment that the human body can convert into vitamin A. Its accumulation in the endosperm gives Golden rice its color and provitamin A value.
Ingo Potrykus: A Swiss plant scientist who co-developed Golden Rice with Peter Beyer. Potrykus helped lead the research that produced the first Golden Rice plants.
Vitamin A deficiency: A condition caused by inadequate vitamin A, which can impair vision, immunity, and growth. Golden Rice was developed as a food-based response to vitamin A deficiency.
Vitamin A supplementation: The provision of concentrated vitamin A doses through capsules, drops, or other supplements. It delivers vitamin A directly, unlike Golden Rice’s reliance on dietary beta-carotene conversion.
Carotenoid biosynthesis: The cellular pathway that produces carotenoid pigments from isoprenoid precursors. Golden rice redirects this pathway so beta-carotene accumulates in the edible grain.

Biofortification: The breeding or genetic alteration of crops to increase their nutritional value. Golden Rice is a genetically engineered example of biofortification.

Phytoene synthase: An enzyme that joins geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate molecules to form phytoene, an early carotenoid precursor. An introduced phytoene synthase enables carotenoid production in rice endosperm.
Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich: A Swiss public research university known internationally as ETH Zurich. Potrykus’s research group at ETH Zurich helped create the first Golden Rice.
