Golf course management

Golf course management is the strategic selection of targets and shots to reduce scoring risk while playing a golf course. It balances expected score, hazards, lie, and a player’s shot-making abilities.

Course strategy: A plan for navigating a course toward a desired result while managing constraints and risks. Golf course management applies strategic planning to each hole and shot.
Tee shot: The first shot played on a golf hole, usually from a designated teeing area. The tee shot sets the position and angle for the rest of the hole.
Golf course: A designed outdoor area containing holes played in sequence, each with a teeing area, fairway, and green. Management decisions respond to the layout and hazards of a particular course.
Risk–reward tradeoff: A decision principle that compares a possible benefit with the likelihood and cost of adverse outcomes. Golfers use this tradeoff when deciding whether a risky line offers enough scoring gain.
Strokes gained: A statistical method that measures performance by comparing shots with expected scores from similar situations. It quantifies whether a management decision improves expected scoring.
Approach shot: A shot intended to bring the ball onto or near the putting green. Approach targets determine birdie chances and the danger of short-sided misses.
Golf hole: A unit of golf play from a teeing area to a green and its cup. Each hole creates a sequence of target and risk decisions.
Aggressive play: A style of play that pursues high-reward outcomes despite greater chances of failure or loss. Aggressive targets can raise scoring potential while increasing exposure to penalties.
Expected value: The probability-weighted average outcome of a decision across possible results. Choosing a shot often means weighing a likely safe result against a costly miss.
Par-5 strategy: The planning of shots on a par-five hole, including whether to attempt reaching the green in two. Par fives make the choice between attacking and laying up especially visible.
