Gordon Parks

Gordon Parks (1912–2006) was an American photographer, filmmaker, writer, and composer whose work documented Black life and challenged racial injustice. He directed The Learning Tree and Shaft.

American Gothic, Washington, D.C.: A 1942 photograph by Gordon Parks portraying government worker Ella Watson with a mop and broom before an American flag. The portrait made racial inequality visible through a deliberate echo of Grant Wood’s painting.
Life (magazine): An American weekly photojournalism magazine published from 1936 to 2000. Parks’s assignments there gave national audiences sustained visual accounts of Black lives.
Fort Scott, Kansas: A city in southeastern Kansas where Gordon Parks was born and spent part of his childhood. Parks drew on his childhood there when writing The Learning Tree.
