Gothic Bible

The Gothic Bible is the surviving fragments of a fourth-century translation of the Bible into Gothic, traditionally attributed to the missionary Ulfilas. Its remnants are among the earliest substantial records of a Germanic language.

Gothic language: An extinct East Germanic language known chiefly from biblical manuscripts and a few other texts. The translation’s language preserves the largest surviving body of Gothic writing.
Codex Argenteus: A lavishly written sixth-century manuscript containing much of the Gothic Gospels. Its purple pages and silver-and-gold lettering preserve the best-known Gothic Bible witness.
Gothic Christianity: The Christian traditions and institutions that developed among Gothic peoples in late antiquity. The translation served a Gothic-speaking Christian community.
Gothic grammar: The system of Gothic sounds, word forms, and sentence structure reconstructed from surviving texts. The biblical corpus supplies most of the evidence for describing Gothic grammar.
Ulfilas: A fourth-century bishop and missionary associated with the conversion of Goths to Christianity. Tradition credits him with translating the Bible into Gothic.
Codex Ambrosianus: A group of palimpsest leaves preserving portions of the Gothic Bible, especially parts of the Old Testament. These leaves preserve biblical material beyond the Gospels in the Codex Argenteus.
Arian Christianity: A form of fourth-century Christianity that rejected the Nicene account of the Son’s full equality with the Father. Ulfilas and Gothic Christianity are commonly associated with this theological tradition.
Germanic philology: The comparative study of Germanic languages and their historical development. Gothic forms in the Bible help scholars compare early Germanic languages.
Greek New Testament: The collection of early Christian writings composed in Greek that forms the New Testament. Greek versions supplied the principal source text for the surviving Gothic New Testament.
Palimpsest: A manuscript page whose earlier writing was erased or obscured so the material could be reused. Some Gothic biblical leaves survive beneath later writing.
