Gothic Revival

Gothic Revival was a nineteenth-century movement that revived medieval Gothic forms in architecture and design, often adapting them to modern institutions, materials, and social ideals.

Gothic architecture: A medieval architectural style characterized by pointed arches, rib vaults, and large windows. Gothic Revival drew its vocabulary from this medieval style.
Horace Walpole: An English writer and politician whose Strawberry Hill house helped popularize Gothic taste in the eighteenth century. His house made Gothic forms fashionable before the movement’s nineteenth-century expansion.
Augustus Pugin: An English architect and designer who developed Gothic Revival buildings and interiors in the nineteenth century. His designs established a richly detailed, religiously committed strand of the movement.

St Pancras railway station: A London railway station and hotel whose Victorian Gothic design was completed in the nineteenth century. Its scale shows Gothic Revival serving modern transport and commerce.
