Gothic War (535–554)

A prolonged conflict in which the Eastern Roman Empire reconquered Italy from the Ostrogothic kingdom. Fighting devastated the peninsula and weakened both sides.

Belisarius: A Byzantine general who led the initial invasion of Ostrogothic Italy and captured Rome. His rapid early victories brought Sicily, Naples, and Rome under imperial control.
Justinian I: Eastern Roman emperor from 527 to 565 who pursued territorial reconquest and legal and religious consolidation. He ordered the invasion of Italy as part of his western reconquest.
Pragmatic Sanction of 554: An imperial decree that reorganized government and property in Italy after the Gothic War. It set out how Justinian’s government intended to administer the conquered peninsula.
Siege of Naples (536): A Byzantine siege that captured Naples from the Ostrogoths in 536. Its capture opened the route northward for Belisarius’s advance on Rome.
Siege of Rome (537–538): A year-long Ostrogothic siege of Rome during Belisarius’s defense of the city. The siege became the war’s defining early test of Byzantine control.
Amalasuntha: Ostrogothic regent and queen whose alliance with Constantinople and death in 535 intensified conflict with Justinian. Her killing gave Justinian a political pretext to intervene in Italy.
Lombard invasion of Italy: The Lombard migration and conquest of parts of Italy beginning in 568. The invasion followed soon after the war had exhausted Italy’s defenses and resources.
Siege of Rome (546): Totila’s capture of Rome in 546 after the city’s Byzantine defenders ran short of supplies. The loss demonstrated that Belisarius’s earlier defense had not secured lasting control.
Totila: An Ostrogothic king who recovered much of Italy from Byzantine forces before his defeat in 552. His counteroffensive prolonged the conflict after the empire’s initial successes.
Ostrogothic Kingdom: A post-Roman kingdom centered in Italy, ruled by the Ostrogoths from 493 until its conquest by the Eastern Roman Empire. The war dismantled this kingdom and ended its independent rule in Italy.
