Gottlieb Daimler

Gottlieb Daimler (1834–1900) was a German engineer and industrialist who developed high-speed internal-combustion engines and helped create early automobiles and motorcycles.

Grandfather clock engine: A compact vertical-cylinder four-stroke engine developed by Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach in 1885. Its light, fast-running design powered Daimler’s first motorcycle and demonstrated a portable engine.
Nikolaus Otto: A German engineer whose four-stroke internal-combustion engine became a foundation for later engine development. Daimler worked under Otto before pursuing faster, lighter engines for mobile use.
Daimler Motorized Carriage: An 1886 four-wheeled vehicle fitted with Daimler and Maybach’s high-speed engine. It demonstrated how their engine could be installed in a conventional carriage.
Emil Jellinek: An Austrian-Hungarian entrepreneur who commissioned and promoted Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft automobiles. His orders and influence helped shape the Mercedes name and the company’s early car designs.
Mercedes: A marque whose name derives from Mercedes Jellinek and became associated with Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft automobiles. The marque grew from the company Daimler co-founded, although it was named after Emil Jellinek’s daughter.
Four-stroke engine: An internal-combustion engine cycle with intake, compression, power, and exhaust strokes. Daimler’s engines adapted this cycle for higher speeds and compact vehicle use.
Deutz AG: A German engine manufacturer founded in Cologne in 1864 as N. A. Otto & Cie. Daimler and Maybach developed engines there before leaving to establish their own workshop.
Daimler Stahlradwagen: A steel-wheeled automobile developed by Daimler and Maybach and presented in 1889. Its purpose-built design moved beyond adapting engines to existing horse-drawn vehicles.
Karl Benz: A German engineer who independently developed an early practical automobile powered by an internal-combustion engine. Benz pursued a purpose-built motorcar separately from Daimler’s engine-and-carriage approach.
Daimler Company: A British automobile and engine manufacturer established in 1896 using technology licensed from Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft. It carried Daimler’s name and licensed engineering into the British vehicle industry.
