Gottlob Frege

Gottlob Frege (1848–1925) was a German philosopher, logician, and mathematician who developed modern predicate logic and shaped the philosophy of language and analytic philosophy.

Predicate logic: A formal system that represents relations, properties, and quantification over objects. Frege transformed predicate logic by representing quantifiers and relations more precisely than traditional syllogistic logic.
Begriffsschrift: Frege’s 1879 formal language for expressing logical relations and proving propositions. This work introduced his distinctive notation and demonstrated the power of predicate logic.
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz: A German philosopher and mathematician who sought a universal formal language for reasoning. Leibniz’s dream of a formal language anticipates Frege’s logical notation.
Logicism: The thesis that mathematics can be derived from logical principles and definitions. Frege pursued logicism by attempting to derive arithmetic from logic.
Psychologism: The view that logical laws or mathematical truths are grounded in psychological facts about human thought. Frege rejected psychologism, insisting that logical laws are objective rather than facts about mental processes.
Sense and reference: Frege’s distinction between a linguistic expression’s mode of presentation and the object or truth value it designates. This distinction explains how co-referring names can convey different information.
Universal quantification: The logical operation asserting that a predicate holds of every object in a specified domain. Frege’s formal system could express universal claims with greater scope clarity than syllogistic notation.
George Boole: An English mathematician who developed an algebraic treatment of logic. Boole helped establish mathematical logic before Frege recast it around quantification and relations.
The Foundations of Arithmetic: Frege’s 1884 work arguing that arithmetic truths are analytic and grounded in logic. This book set out his influential philosophical case for logicism.
Formalism: The philosophy of mathematics that treats mathematical theories primarily as formal symbol systems governed by rules. Frege opposed accounts that made arithmetic merely a manipulation of symbols.
