Gouache

Gouache is an opaque water-based paint made from pigment and a binding agent. It dries to a matte finish and can produce flat, saturated areas of color.

Gum arabic: A water-soluble plant gum used as a binder in watercolor and other paints. It commonly binds gouache pigment into a water-soluble paint film.
Water-soluble paint: Paint whose binder can be dispersed or softened by water. Gouache belongs to this broad family of paints.
Illustration: Visual imagery made to clarify, interpret, or accompany a subject or text. Gouache is often used for controlled, colorful images in editorial and book illustration.
Acrylic paint: A water-based paint whose synthetic polymer binder forms a water-resistant film as it dries. Unlike gouache, acrylic generally becomes water-resistant after drying.
Illuminated manuscript: A handwritten book decorated with painted images, ornament, or gold and silver leaf. Opaque water-based colors related to gouache were used in manuscript painting.
Pigment: A finely divided colored substance that gives paint its color and opacity. Pigment particles supply gouache’s color and contribute to its covering power.
Binding medium: A substance that holds pigment particles together and attaches them to a surface. The binder gives gouache its usable consistency and helps pigment adhere to paper.
Graphic design: The practice of arranging visual elements to communicate information or ideas. Gouache can create clean color shapes that designers reproduce in print.
Casein paint: A water-based paint that uses milk protein as its binder. Casein can resemble gouache’s matte opacity but uses a different binder.
Persian miniature: A small-scale painting tradition associated with Persian manuscripts and finely detailed scenes. Its layered, vivid painting practices provide a major historical context for opaque water-based color.
