Gradient

The gradient of a scalar field is a vector field pointing toward the direction of greatest increase, with magnitude equal to the rate of increase in that direction.

Directional derivative: The rate at which a scalar field changes in a specified direction at a point. The gradient’s dot product with a direction vector gives this rate of change.
Scalar field: A function that assigns a scalar value to each point in a space. The gradient acts on scalar fields and produces vector fields.
Gradient descent: An iterative optimization method that updates parameters opposite the gradient of an objective function. It uses the gradient to choose the direction of fastest local decrease.
Divergence: A scalar differential operator measuring the net outward flow of a vector field near a point. Unlike the gradient, divergence takes a vector field as input and returns a scalar.
Weak derivative: A derivative defined through integration against test functions rather than pointwise limits. Weak gradients let nonsmooth functions enter many differential equations.
Partial derivative: A derivative measuring how a function changes with respect to one variable while others are held fixed. The gradient collects the partial derivatives with respect to each coordinate.
Vector field: A function assigning a vector to each point in a space. The gradient’s output is a vector field over the scalar field’s domain.
Potential energy: Stored energy associated with the position or configuration of a physical system. The negative gradient of potential energy gives the force in conservative systems.
Curl: A vector differential operator measuring the local rotation of a vector field in three dimensions. Unlike the gradient, curl acts on vector fields and detects local rotation.
Sobolev space: A function space whose members and weak derivatives satisfy specified integrability conditions. Sobolev spaces provide a setting where gradients exist in a generalized sense.
