Grammar-translation method

The grammar-translation method teaches languages through explicit grammar rules, vocabulary memorization, and translation between the target language and learners’ own language.

Deductive language teaching: An instructional approach that presents rules before students apply them to examples. Grammar-translation typically explains a rule before learners translate sentences illustrating it.
Classical education: An educational tradition centered on the study of classical languages, literature, and texts. The method inherited practices used to teach Latin and Greek through texts and grammatical analysis.
Direct method: A language-teaching approach that uses the target language directly, emphasizing speech and meaning without translation. It rejects the reliance on learners’ first language that defines grammar-translation.
Reading proficiency: The ability to read and understand texts in a language. The method’s text-centered exercises can develop reading skills, especially for literary material.

Audio-lingual method: A language-teaching approach based on listening, speaking, and repeated practice of sentence patterns. It prioritizes oral drills rather than written rule explanation and translation.
Metalinguistic awareness: The ability to reflect consciously on language and its structure. Explicit grammatical analysis can build learners’ conscious knowledge of language patterns.
Vocabulary learning: The processes by which learners acquire knowledge of words and their use. Learners commonly memorize paired word lists to support translation.
Greek language: An Indo-European language with a documented history spanning more than three millennia. The study of written Greek, like Latin, helped shape rule-and-translation language teaching.
