Grand Canal of China

The Grand Canal of China is a vast system of connected waterways linking northern and southern China. Built and expanded across successive dynasties, it moved grain, goods, and people between regions.

Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal: The principal north–south route of the Grand Canal, extending between Beijing and Hangzhou. This route gives the larger waterway system its best-known geographic outline.
Hangou Canal: An ancient canal connecting the Yangtze region with the Huai River basin. This early waterway formed part of the route later incorporated into the Grand Canal.
Grain tribute system: The imperial system of collecting and transporting grain taxes to support the Chinese state and its capital. Canal barges carried tax grain from productive southern regions toward northern centers.
Cultural Heritage of the Grand Canal: The historic sites, engineering works, landscapes, and traditions associated with China's Grand Canal. Its heritage status recognizes the canal as both infrastructure and a record of social life.
Peking–Hankow Railway: A railway completed in 1906 that connected Beijing with Hankou in central China. Rail transport challenged the canal's role in moving people and freight across northern China.
Sui dynasty: A Chinese dynasty that ruled from 581 to 618 and reunified much of China. Sui rulers connected existing waterways into a strategic north–south network.
Lingqu Canal: A canal built in the Qin dynasty to connect the Xiang and Li river systems in southern China. It illustrates the earlier Chinese tradition of linking river basins with canals.
Beijing: The capital of China, located in the northern part of the country. The canal helped supply Beijing after it became the imperial capital.
Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal UNESCO World Heritage Site: A UNESCO World Heritage property inscribed in 2014, encompassing historic sections of the Grand Canal. The designation identifies surviving canal works and landscapes judged to have outstanding universal value.
China's Maritime Silk Road: A network of sea routes linking Chinese ports with other parts of Asia and beyond. It represents overseas trade routes rather than the canal's inland north–south connections.
