Grand Secretariat

The Grand Secretariat was a central institution of Ming China that coordinated government business and advised the emperor. Its grand secretaries gained influence by shaping documents and mediating access to imperial decisions.

Ming dynasty: A Chinese dynasty that ruled from 1368 to 1644. The Secretariat operated within the Ming court and its changing institutions.
Hongwu Emperor: The founding emperor of the Ming dynasty, who ruled from 1368 to 1398. His abolition of the chief councilor’s office reshaped central administration before the Secretariat rose.
