Grand Slam (tennis)

A Grand Slam in tennis is the achievement of winning the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open in a single calendar year.

Rod Laver: Australian tennis player who won two calendar-year Grand Slams in singles. He remains the only man to complete the calendar-year singles Grand Slam in the Open Era.
Australian Open: A major tennis tournament held annually in Melbourne, usually in January. It is the first of the four tournaments in the annual sequence.
Career Grand Slam: Winning each of tennis's four major singles tournaments at least once during a career. It requires the same four titles but not in consecutive tournaments or one year.
Tennis rankings: Systems that order tennis players using results from a defined period. A Grand Slam season can produce dominant results, though the achievement itself is not a ranking.
Margaret Court: Australian tennis player who won 24 major singles titles and a calendar-year Grand Slam. She completed the calendar-year singles Grand Slam in 1970.
French Open: A major tennis tournament held annually in Paris on outdoor clay courts. Its clay-court conditions make the second stage unlike the other majors.
Golden Slam: Winning all four major tennis singles titles and Olympic singles gold in one calendar year. It adds an Olympic title to the calendar-year Grand Slam.
Tennis rivalries: Sustained competitive contests between tennis players or teams. Rivals can determine whether a player sustains title-winning form through all four majors.
Steffi Graf: German tennis player who won 22 major singles titles and an Olympic gold medal in 1988. Her 1988 calendar-year Grand Slam also included Olympic gold, known as the Golden Slam.
Wimbledon: A major tennis tournament held annually in London on grass courts. Its grass courts impose a distinct challenge in the middle of the sequence.
