Granite

Granite is a coarse-grained intrusive igneous rock composed mainly of quartz and feldspar, with mica or other dark minerals. It crystallizes slowly from magma beneath Earth’s surface.

Quartz: Quartz is a hard crystalline mineral composed of silicon and oxygen in a continuous framework. Its abundant grains are a defining component of granite.
Magma: Magma is molten or partially molten rock beneath Earth’s surface, containing dissolved gases and crystals. Granite forms when a suitable magma crystallizes underground.
Dimension stone: Dimension stone is natural rock quarried and cut to specified sizes for construction or decoration. Granite is quarried as blocks and slabs for architectural use.
Enchanted Rock: Enchanted Rock is a large pink granite dome in central Texas, within the Llano Uplift. Its exposed granite reveals a major intrusive body shaped by erosion.
Rhyolite: Rhyolite is a fine-grained, silica-rich volcanic rock with a composition similar to granite. Their similar chemistry contrasts granite’s underground cooling with rapid cooling at the surface.
Feldspar: Feldspar is a group of abundant rock-forming aluminosilicate minerals containing potassium, sodium, or calcium. Feldspar commonly makes up most of granite’s light-colored grains.
Fractional crystallization: Fractional crystallization is the separation of early-forming crystals from a cooling melt. It can change magma composition toward the silica-rich melts that form granite.
Granite countertop: A granite countertop is a kitchen or bathroom surface made from polished granite slabs or engineered panels. This familiar use depends on granite’s hardness, polish, and visual variation.
Mount Rushmore: Mount Rushmore is a South Dakota mountain carved with four monumental presidential sculptures. The sculptures occupy a granite face selected for its durable rock.
Diorite: Diorite is a coarse-grained intrusive rock composed mainly of plagioclase feldspar and dark minerals. Its lower silica content and darker appearance distinguish it from granite.
