Granular packing

Granular packing is the spatial arrangement of discrete grains in a container or bulk material. Its density and contact network depend on grain properties, boundaries, and preparation.

Random close packing: A dense disordered arrangement of particles formed without crystalline order, near the maximum density attainable by random packing. It describes a dense limit for disordered assemblies of roughly spherical grains.
Porosity: The fraction of a material's volume occupied by pores or voids. It measures the empty space between grains in a packing.
Angle of repose: The steepest angle at which a pile of loose granular material remains stable. Pile shape reflects friction and the stability of grain arrangements.
Crystal structure: The ordered, repeating arrangement of atoms, ions, or molecules in a crystalline solid. Crystals provide periodic order, unlike the irregular arrangements typical of granular packing.
Edwards statistical mechanics: A statistical framework that describes mechanically stable granular states using volume as a state variable. It seeks an ensemble-based account of the many possible jammed packings.
Jamming transition: A transition in which a disordered collection of particles becomes mechanically rigid as density or confinement increases. Packing becomes load-bearing when its contact network blocks particle rearrangement.
Packing fraction: The fraction of a region's volume occupied by the solid particles within it. This is the standard quantitative measure of packing density.
Silo: A structure used to store bulk materials such as grain, cement, or coal. Stored grains develop wall stresses and packing patterns that affect discharge.
Face-centered cubic packing: A close-packed arrangement with particles at cube corners and face centers. It is an ordered dense arrangement against which random packings are compared.
Hyperuniformity: A form of large-scale order in which density fluctuations are suppressed at long wavelengths. Some jammed packings show unexpected suppression of long-range density fluctuations.
