Great Dividing Range

The Great Dividing Range is a chain of highlands along eastern Australia, extending from northern Queensland to southeastern South Australia. It separates much of the continent’s coastal drainage from its inland drainage.

Australian Cordillera: The mountainous highlands running along eastern Australia. The Great Dividing Range forms the principal part of this broader eastern highland system.
Eastern Australian temperate forests: Forests across eastern Australia shaped by temperate climates and regional rainfall. Moist slopes support extensive forests, with vegetation changing across the range’s elevations.
Tasmanides: A belt of ancient rocks and geological structures forming much of eastern Australia. These accreted geological provinces underpin large parts of the range.
Snowy Mountains Scheme: A large hydroelectric and water-diversion project built in southeastern Australia from 1949 to 1974. It rerouted alpine rivers across the range to generate electricity and supply irrigation water.
Mount Kosciuszko: A mountain in New South Wales and the highest peak on the Australian mainland. At 2,228 metres, it is the range’s highest summit.
Australian Alps: A high mountain region spanning southeastern New South Wales and northeastern Victoria. They contain the range’s highest mountains, including Mount Kosciuszko.
Murray–Darling basin: Australia’s largest river system, draining much of the southeast into the Murray River. Rivers rising on the inland side of the range feed this major basin.
Lachlan Fold Belt: A Paleozoic geological province spanning much of central and southeastern New South Wales and Victoria. Its deformed rocks contribute to the geology of the range’s southern sections.
Kosciuszko National Park: A protected area in the Australian Alps of New South Wales, including Mount Kosciuszko. Its alpine landscapes are a major focus of conservation and recreation within the range.
Mount Bogong: The highest mountain in Victoria, located in the Australian Alps. Its alpine summit illustrates the range’s high terrain in Victoria.
