Great Emigration

The mass departure of Polish political exiles to Western Europe after Russia suppressed the November Uprising of 1830–1831. Its émigré communities became centers of Polish political and cultural life.

November Uprising: A Polish revolt against Russian rule that began in November 1830 and was suppressed in 1831. Its defeat sent thousands of Polish soldiers and political activists into exile.
Adam Mickiewicz: A Polish Romantic poet whose works became central to Polish national literature. His poetry and political activity made him one of the exile community’s defining figures.
Polish Legions: Polish military formations raised abroad to fight alongside foreign powers in hopes of restoring Poland. They provide an earlier model of military service abroad for a national cause.

Polish culture: The literary, artistic, and intellectual traditions associated with Polish society. Émigré writers and artists carried Polish culture into European capitals.
Battle of Warsaw (1831): A September 1831 Russian assault that captured Warsaw and ended organized resistance in the uprising. The fall of the capital sealed the military defeat that precipitated mass exile.
Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski: A Polish statesman who led a conservative émigré political network based in Paris. His Hôtel Lambert became a principal center of exile diplomacy.
