Great Game

The Great Game was the nineteenth-century strategic rivalry between the British and Russian empires for influence and security in Central Asia.

Central Asia: A vast inland region of Asia encompassing areas including modern Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan. The region whose routes, states, and frontiers formed the rivalry’s central arena.
Russian Empire: A Eurasian empire ruled by the Romanov dynasty from 1721 until the Russian Revolution of 1917. Its southward expansion brought it into sustained strategic competition with Britain.
Arthur Conolly: A British army officer and explorer whose travels and writing helped popularize the phrase “Great Game.” His journeys and correspondence gave the rivalry its enduring name.
First Anglo-Afghan War: A war fought from 1839 to 1842 between Britain and Afghanistan, ending in a disastrous British retreat from Kabul. The invasion exposed the limits and human cost of trying to install a compliant Afghan ruler.
Cold War: The prolonged geopolitical competition between the United States and the Soviet Union after World War II. The name “Great Game” is often reused for this later rivalry, but the historical setting and actors differ.
British India: The territories of the Indian subcontinent governed by Britain, directly or through princely states, before independence. British policymakers viewed the defense of India as the rivalry’s overriding strategic concern.
British Raj: The period of direct British Crown rule over much of the Indian subcontinent, from 1858 to 1947. The Raj made defense of India a central driver of British policy toward Central Asia.
Alexander Burnes: A Scottish officer and explorer who traveled through Central Asia and served in Afghanistan. His missions exemplified British efforts to gather knowledge and cultivate influence in the region.
Second Anglo-Afghan War: A war fought from 1878 to 1880 that secured British influence over Afghanistan’s foreign relations. It followed a Russian diplomatic mission to Kabul and made Afghanistan a buffer between empires.
New Great Game: A label for modern competition among outside powers for influence in Central Asia. It borrows the nineteenth-century metaphor for a distinct period with different states and stakes.
