Knowra Great Hungarian Plain Great Hungarian Plain The Great Hungarian Plain is a vast lowland in the Carpathian Basin, chiefly in eastern Hungary and extending into neighboring countries. Its open grasslands, fertile soils, and river systems have shaped settlement and agriculture.
Carpathian Basin : A large basin enclosed by the Carpathian Mountains and neighboring ranges in Central Europe. The Great Hungarian Plain occupies the basin’s broad eastern and southeastern lowlands.
Agriculture in Hungary : The cultivation of crops and raising of livestock within Hungary’s varied landscapes and climate. The plain is the country’s principal agricultural region, especially for arable crops.
Pannonian Sea : A shallow prehistoric lake that occupied much of the Pannonian Basin during the Miocene and Pliocene epochs. Its sediments contributed to the flat basin floor later shaped into the present plain.
Kiskunság National Park : A protected area in central Hungary conserving sand dunes, saline grasslands, wetlands, and steppe habitats. Its varied habitats show that the plain includes more than uniform farmland.

Miocene : A geological epoch lasting from about 23 million to 5.3 million years ago. Basin formation and the retreat of the Pannonian Sea began during this epoch.
Körös-Maros National Park : A national park in southeastern Hungary protecting grasslands, wetlands, and riverine habitats. It preserves characteristic landscapes where the Körös rivers cross the plain.
Danube : Europe’s second-longest river, flowing from Germany through Central and Southeastern Europe to the Black Sea. The river bounds the plain’s western side and links its landscapes to wider European routes.
Hungarian horse : A group of horse breeds developed in Hungary, including the Nonius and Furioso-North Star. The plain’s open grazing lands and military history fostered important horse-breeding traditions.
